The new Cat® 313D GC (Series 2) hydraulic excavator is designed to combine powerful, versatile, performance with low owning and operating costs for optimum customer value. With a maximum operating weight of 13 400 kg (29,542 lb.), the 313D2 GC uses a fuel-efficient Cat C4.4 diesel engine and features a powerful hydraulic system that delivers high flows and pressures for aggressive digging and lifting, as well as for handling powered attachments. Operator comfort and safety, as well as accessible serviceability, are key aspects of the machine's design, and the new model's robust main structures ensure structural strength and durability.

The engine, ISO 14396-rated at 75 kW (100 net horsepower) and meeting China Nonroad Stage III emission standards, equivalent to EU Stage IIIA and U.S. EPA Tier 3 , has a mechanically controlled, low-pressure fuel-injection system, capable of operating efficiently with fuels of varying quality. The fuel system incorporates a highly efficient filtration system with a primary filter/ water separator and a small-micron final filter. Configured to operate at a maximum speed of 1,650 rpm with a net-power rating of 55kW (74 horsepower), the 313D2 GC uses up to 15 percent less fuel, depending on the application, compared with its 313D2 counterpart.

Powerful and versatile

Hydraulic power and efficiency are key design features for the new 313D2 GC, with hydraulic flows to 232 L/min (61.3 gpm) and a main-relief pressure of 30 500 kPa (4,424 psi). Auxiliary-hydraulic and electrical lines are routed to the boom foot to facilitate installation of added circuits, and the compact design of the hydraulic system utilizes short tubes and lines to reduce friction and pressure drop. Hydraulic snubbers at the rod end of the boom cylinders and both ends of the stick cylinders cushion shock, reduce sound, and increase cylinder life.

Hydraulic flow is reduced to a minimum when controls are in neutral to reduce fuel consumption and to extend component life, and a hydraulic cross-sensing system uses two hydraulic pumps under all operating conditions to enhance implement speed and stronger pivot turns. Regeneration valves in the boom and stick circuits save energy during boom-down and stick-in operation to increase efficiency by reducing loads on the pump to conserve fuel.

Work-mode and power-mode switches have been eliminated, making full power available at all times, and automatic boom- and swing-priority functions automatically select the optimum mode based on joystick movement. Electronic controls match engine speed and hydraulic demand, and flow is reduced when controls are in neutral to reduce fuel consumption and component wear. Versatility is enhanced with a complete range of available buckets and work tools, including grapples, thumbs, hydraulic hammers, and compactors.

Structures

Caterpillar uses advanced engineering and software to analyze structures, creating a durable, reliable machine for the most demanding applications. More than 70 percent of structural welds are robotic and achieve three times the penetration, compared with manual welds.

The carbody's X-shape, box-section design resists bending, and track-roller frames are press-formed in a strong pentagonal shape. Sealed and grease-lubricated track chains reduce pin-and-bushing wear and reduce travel noise. Travel motors have automatic speed selection, allowing the 313D2 GC to change between high and low speed ranges as the operating situation demands.

The 2.5-meter (8.17-ft.) stick-or available 3.0-meter (9.83-ft.) stick-incorporate new forging and welding processes for increased durability, digging forces, and lifting capacities. The 4.65-meter (15.25-ft.) one-piece reach boom features components fabricated from a new, stronger forging pattern. A light attached to the left side offers improved visibility in low-light conditions.
